Go to What's On Top - Arkansas

State Capitol. Little Rock, Ark.
Pre-linen postcard published circa 1920 by Jungkind Photo Supply Co., Little Rock, Ark. Made in U. S. A.

The final design of the building is shown in this postcard published after the capitol was completed. Many views are like those below showing the original plan that was later altered.

State Capitol, Little Rock, Ark.
Antique postcard published circa 1910.

Embossing postcards with gold-tone accents was popular at the time of this view's publication. This one was apparently produced from the same photo and artwork as the three views below. The most noticeable difference between them is the depiction of the sky.

New State Capitol Building. Little Rock, Ark.
Antique Postcard from the private collection of Valerie Mockaitis. Published by W. E. Shannahan, Hot Springs, Arkansas circa 1910.

This building design was originally planned for the Montana state capitol. It was deemed too expensive for Montana, but later used for the new Arkansas capitol with some cost-cutting changes.

The Arkansas State Capitol. Little Rock, Ark.
Antique postcard published circa 1905 by
Raphael Tuck & Sons. Printed in England.

There are many early postcards of this capitol showing the wrong dome and other features the building never had. This view appears to be from the same photograph as the one above. Notice the pedestrians and carriages in the card above are included here, with even more added.

Apple Blossom, Arkansas State Flower

The verse reads:

The emblem apple blossom fair,
For our dear Arkansas, we wear,
Timber and mines the state doth hold
But her true worth is more than gold.

Entrance of the old Arkansas capitol

Classic Entrance, Old State Capitol, Built in 1832, Little Rock, Ark.
Antique postcard published circa 1910.

This view of just the portico gives a very different impression from the full facade in the card above.

Old State Capitol, Little Rock, Ark.
Antique postcard published circa 1905 by Thalheimer Bros., Importers & Publishers, Little Rock, Ark. Made in Germany.

The artistic framing seen on earlier postcards like this one and the one below were soon replaced with simple white borders.

Arkansas State Capitol. Little Rock, Ark.
Antique, embossed postcard published circa 1905 by S. Langsdorf & Co. Publishing, New York, N. Y. Made in Germany.

Of the six cards on this page made from the same photo, this is the only one with a simple, cloudless sky.

Capitol Avenue, Looking West, Little Rock, Ark.
Pre-linen postcard published circa 1920.

This view shows how the main entrance is not precisely aligned with the street approaching it as was planned. The cars were probably added by the artist, as well as the pedestrians.

State Capitol, Little Rock, Ark.
Antique postcard published circa 1905.

This is another view which was very likely made from the same artwork as the pre-completion views of the new capitol above. There are no carriages, but the added pedestrians are in the same places in one or both of the other cards. This artist added an interesting green hue to the building.
