The dome and drum of this capitol are white and not the green and gray as shown here. Those colors and the colorful sky were chosen by the artist who tinted the whole scene, which was taken from a black-and-white photograph.

This was Elijah E. Myers' first state capitol. The Lansing citizens were so proud of their new capitol, they called it the "Lion of Lansing."

Stereoscopic card circa 1885. From the Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views.

When viewed through a stereoscope, these cards produced a 3D image. They were very popular from the 1850s to the late 1920s. An enlargement of the right side is shown below.

  Michigan's first capitol in Detroit

First Michigan State Capitol, Detroit, Mich.
Historic Photograph circa 1850.

This red brick building was completed in 1828 as the Michigan Territorial capitol. It became the state capitol when Michigan was granted statehood in 1837. When the capital city was moved to Lansing in 1847, this old capitol became a school and library. It burned in 1893.

 
 
 

Second Michigan State Capitol, Lansing
Historic Photograph circa 1860.

This frame building was constructed as a temporary capitol in 1847 when Lansing became Michigan's new capital city. After the new, permanent Lansing capitol was finished, this old capitol was used for light industrial purposes. It burned in 1882.
